Re-Membering I Am the Universe

The very first time I touched a crystal sound bowl, I was on a guided plant medicine journey. I closed my eyes and let the sound guide me. It felt completely intuitive - like I was remembering something from a past life.

This past November, I was craving an adventure to Costa Rica and to dive back into teaching yoga. I signed up for a website called YogaTrade (highly recommend for all yogi explorers). The very first listing I found was for a sound healing certification retreat being hosted in Uvita, Costa Rica. They were looking for a yoga teacher - and the retreat was only a few weeks away. It felt like such a serendipitous opportunity. I connected with the host, we hit it off, and I was booking my flight within the hour.
I had the privilege to guide yoga classes in a beautiful, open-air yoga shala in the jungle - like literally watching toucans fly by mid-flow. I connected with incredible women from all over the US, and to top it all off, I came home with a 50-hour sound healing certification!
Not only was it a magical adventure filled with monkeys, waterfalls & blue morpho butterflies, it was also a journey inward. A deeply healing re-membering back to who I truly am: the Universe.
The word 'universe' actually translates to 'one song'. We are all connected in this never-ending melody of Oneness. The ancient yogis replicated the original sound of the Universe when they chanted 'ohm'. According to the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, ohm is the origin seed from which all other sounds and words come.
Similarly, sound healing is an ancient practice that has been used to promote physical, emotional and spiritual well-being for thousands of years. Think of the sacred chanting & bronze singing bowls utilized in meditation by Tibetan monks. Or the rhythmic drumming used in indigenous ceremonies to shift consciousness and promote healing. In fact, drums & percussive instruments are widely considered to be the oldest musical instruments. Shamanic drumming is used to this day to alter brainwave states - bringing the brain from the active gamma or beta states down to the deep healing states of theta or delta.
So how exactly does sound healing work?
Sound is vibration. Think about placing your hand on a speaker - you can physically feel the motion.
The 30 trillion cells that make up the human body are also always vibrating. When your cells experience certain high-frequency vibrations, they vibrate in perfect harmony. So you can think of a sound bath as a massage for your cells! Using specific frequencies, sound healing can help to recalibrate the body's energy through deep relaxation, energetic clearing and emotional balancing.
What can you expect at a sound bath?
If you're feeling called to attend a sound healing event, follow your intuition. The best part about this healing modality is that there's nothing for you to do other than show up, rest and receive.
At my sound baths, I incorporate a mixture of crystal sound bowls, drums, chimes and sacred silence to achieve a peaceful journey into wholeness for each guest.
I truly hope to see you at one of our sound healing events soon.
xoxo
